First Tethered iOS 5.1 Jailbreak for Non-A5 Devices Is Already Here

From Gizmodo:

It never takes long for the hacking community to get to grips with new iOS releases, but the first tethered jailbreak of iOS 5.1 is here blisteringly fast.

Redmond Pie reports that the iPhone Dev-Team has updated its Redsn0w jailbreak tool. It now allows users to jailbreak their iOS 5.1 device—but it does require it to be connected to a computer to boot. It works for all iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices—except iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

If you’re desperate to give it a try, there’s a full tutorial over at Redmond Pie (it can be done onWindows or Mac). You’ll have to wait longer to get an untethered jailbreak, though. [Redmond PieThanks Anum!]

Apple Releases iOS 5.1, Possibly Fixing Long-Standing Reception and Battery Issues with the iPhone 4S

From Lifehacker:

Today Apple announced the availability of iOS 5.1 for most of the world and, in a couple of weeks, Japan (who will finally get Siri). While there are few significant changes, there are minor but notable updates. Here are what we think is most relevant:

  • iPhone 4S battery and reception issues should improve, thanks to various bug fixes, optimizations, and new baseband firmware.
  • You can now delete photos from your photo stream.
  • The camera shortcut is now always visible on the home screen.
  • Any audio dropouts during calls should now be a thing of the past.
  • iPads get a redesigned camera app, a 30 second rewind button on podcasts, and audio optimizations for movies and TV shows to make them louder and clearer.

You can update now via Software Update on your iDevice or you can manually install through iTunes. Jailbreakers should hold off for now as there’s no word of when an iOS 5.1 jailbreak will be available.

Box updates app for Android 4.0; Gives 50GB to everyone

From Android Guys:

We just received an email from the team over at Box advising that they’re up to some really big things.  For starters, they’ve updated the Android application with a completely overhauled user interface designed with Ice Cream Sandwich in mind.  In addition to the new look, Box for Android also adds support for major European languages (French, German, Spanish, Italian), as well as the ability to comment on files, invite new teammates to folders and other fun stuff.

To help spread the word about the new app, Box is giving everyone 50GB of free file sharing and storage for the life of their account.  All you have to do is download and install the v1.6 app over the next month.  Existing users are in luck as well and need only to update the current applications.
